The two-day Paediatric First Aid course is perfect for those who act as an appointed paediatric first aider at work or in voluntary and community activities, or for personal interest and development. No previous experience is required, so you can begin your first aid training whenever you need to
The Paediatric First Aid course covers a range of paediatric emergency first aid situations, as well as a range of specific injuries and illnesses.
Childminders, playgroups and school-based providers must have at least one person, who has a current paediatric first aid certificate, on the premises and available at all times when children are present and when accompanying children on outings.
Appointed paediatric first aiders in the workplace must be competent to provide first aid to a child or infant who is injured or becomes ill, as well as be able to apply paediatric first aid to a range of specific injuries and illnesses. This qualification meets the criteria set out in Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Statutory Frameworks for childminders and for group and school-based providers Annex A: Criteria for effective Paediatric First Aid (PFA) training.

When You Get Your Qualification
- It lasts for three years
- Your course resource manual will act as a guide throughout the duration of your qualification, so it’s always there to refer back to should you ever need it
- We recommend that you attend an annual refresher to keep your knowledge up-to-date.
How to Take Your Qualification Further
Once you’ve gained your qualification, you may be appointed as a designated paediatric first aider for your workplace.
Experienced first aiders may wish to become a Junior Medic Instructor or an STA First Aid Tutor / Assessor to pass on the knowledge and skills they have acquired through training to others.
You may wish to develop knowledge and skills further by completing additional STA first aid qualifications or CPDs.
Alternatively, learners may wish to complete additional STA qualifications such as manual handling, fire marshal, lifesaving, swimming teaching and pool plant, to support a career in the leisure industry.

You’ll need to make sure you’ve met the following requirements before you attend your course:
- Be 14 years of age or older at time of assessment
- Be able to perform practical demonstrations on the floor.
Are you wishing to become an STA First Aid tutor to deliver the STA Award in Paediatric First Aid?
To deliver the STA Award in Paediatric First Aid, learners must attend a first aid tutor course. The pre-requisites to attend an STA first aid tutor course are:
- Be at least 19 years of age
- Hold current membership of STA
- Hold a minimum of the Level 3 Award in Education and Training qualification (or acceptable equivalent)
- Hold STA Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (or acceptable equivalent)
- Provide evidence of continuing professional development (CPD).
