STA Update Regarding Recognition of Prior Learning for STA First Aid Qualifications from STA Award for Pool Emergency Responder

Posted on 30th June 2022

Following member enquiries, STA is pleased to confirm requirements and processes regarding Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for STA First Aid Qualifications from STA Award for Pool Emergency Responder.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is a method of assessment [leading to the award of a qualification] that considers whether learners can demonstrate that they can meet the assessment requirements for a unit through knowledge, understanding or skills they already possess and do not need to develop through a course of learning.

If required by the employer or learner, an Approved Training Centre (ATC) may include the following qualification(s) alongside the STA Award for Pool Emergency Responder qualification, providing the additional hours and assessments are met.

  • STA Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW)
  • STA First Aid at Work (FAW)
  • STA Basic Life Support and using an Automated External Defibrillator (BLS and AED)
  • Basic Life Support and Management of Anaphylaxis (BLS and Anaphylaxis).

The ATC must register the additional course, ensure learners have access to the corresponding resource manual and they must complete the course paperwork and assessment for all qualifications.

STA will recognise the prior learning undertaken on the STA Award for Pool Emergency Responder course and in order for learners to obtain the additional qualification and certificate, they are required to complete the relevant unit assessment criteria and contact hours detailed in the Recognition of Prior Learning for STA First Aid Qualifications from the STA Award for Pool Emergency Responder guidance document.

This can be downloaded from Pool Emergency Responder course resources on STA Online.
