Technical Notice: Qualification Resource Updates

Posted on 9th August 2021

Following the technical notice sent on 9th June 2021, Safety Training Awards (STA) are pleased to announce the updated qualification resources are now available on STA Online.

The changes affect the following qualifications:

  • STA Award in Emergency First Aid at Work
  • STA Award in First Aid at Work
  • STA Award in Emergency Paediatric First Aid
  • STA Award in Paediatric First Aid
  • STA Award for Pool Emergency Responder
  • STA Award in Safe Moving and Handling
  • STA Award in Fire Marshall Training
  • STA Award in Basic Life Support and Safe Use of an Automatic External Defibrillation
  • STA Award in Basic Life Support and Management of Anaphylaxis.

The resources have been updated to reflect the theory assessment change from portfolio to MCQ assessment and can be downloaded from STA Online now, allowing Approved Training Centre staff to familiarise themselves with the changes.

The new MCQ assessment papers will be sent out from 23rd August 2021. The new resources and assessment method must be used from Monday 6th September. The resource manuals for the qualifications remain unaffected by these changes.

The multiple-choice question assessment papers (MCQ) will be sent out two weeks prior to the course start date in a sealed envelope. All MCQ assessments must take place in examination conditions under the supervision of the course tutor. Learners must pass all units in order to pass the theory assessment. All MCQ assessment papers must be second marked by an external person to verify the results. If a learner fails a unit, they are only required to retake the failed unit, and this must be completed within 6 weeks of the assessment date.

For further information on the MCQ assessment procedure please read, STA Multiple Choice Question Paper Assessment Guidance which can be found within the course resource section of STA Online.

To evidence learners’ competency in the practical assessment, tutors will need to complete one tutor assessed skills sheet. This sheet lists all the practical assessment criteria, with learners’ names all on one sheet, and only needs to be signed by the tutor.

As part of the assessment review the following qualifications from Monday 6th September only require a practical assessment:

  • STA Award in Basic Life Support and Safe Use of an Automatic External Defibrillation
  • STA Award in Basic Life Support and Management of Anaphylaxis.

The resources for these qualifications have also been updated to reflect this change.

What to do with the resources post-course

Please note:

For the STA Award in First Aid at Work and STA Award in Paediatric First Aid courses, ATCs will be sent one MCQ assessment paper split into two units. The paper is to be completed on the final day of the course.

If an ATC wants to deliver a combined course so 12 learners on day 1 with 6 completing the emergency course and 6 completing the ‘full’ course they will still need to register two separate courses and receive two sets of paperwork / course reference numbers. So those completing the emergency course will sit the assessment at the end of day 1 whereas those completing the ‘full course will sit the assessment paper on the final day.

If you have any questions regarding these requirements or would like to deliver these qualifications, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.
