Withdrawal of Pool Responder Qualification

Posted on 25th January 2017

A review has been conducted into STA’s Pool Responder qualification in line with Ofqual and SQA policies and regulations. Following this review it has been decided that a new Pool Emergency Responder qualification will supersede the existing Pool Responder qualification.

The Pool Emergency Responder will be a 16 hour/two day qualification aimed at training leisure staff to work in facilities with pool depths shallower than 1.5 metres. It will train the learner to competently perform pool rescues and basic life support for adult, child, infant and drowning casualties.

For lifesaving tutors, STA will be providing a free online up-skill programme which will detail the changes between the existing Pool Responder and new Pool Emergency Responder qualifications. This up-skill will be mandatory for all lifesaving tutors to deliver Pool Emergency Responder courses.

Courses can now be registered for the new Pool Emergency Responder, provided they commence on or after 1st April 2017. Courses for the old Pool Responder will not be registerable if they commence on or after 1st June 2017.
